Ideas for the heat?

June 16th, 2012 at 10:25 pm

It is crazy hot here. CRAZY. It was over 90 degrees at 10:00 this morning! And it's over 100 now. I'm pretty stingy when it comes to the air conditioner, but we turned it on at about 10:30. Crazy hot!

I just don't want to deal with it, so it's been an inside day for us. We've been reading and watching movies and working on a few projects around the house. I may go to the gym in a while, but I dread walking from the house to the car!

Tonight's dinner was supposed to be home made pizza, but it's way, way too hot for that. I'm not sure what we'll do instead, but it might be nachos, which are still a little "festive" (we tend to cook something fun on Saturday nights), but won't require the oven.

What delicious meals do you make when it's hot out? Any creative ideas for activities? It's really too hot to go to the pool, even. Searing.

My book club met yesterday and the food was great! We always do a potluck and it's interesting to see what people bring. Someone brought deviled eggs last night. I always forget about those, but they are cheap and tasty and would be a great addition on the nights we eat salad for dinner. Someone else brought lots of expensive, gourmet cheese, which I loved!

Someone told me about cash4books.com, so I decided to try it out. I entered UPCs for about 8 books, but only one was on their "buy" list, and the price they were offering was 47 cents. Ridiculous! I have lots of books that I no longer want, but I will likely try half.com again or just give them away to people I know or donate to the local library.

There are tons of cold pasta and other cold salad recipes. I often go to food.com for ideas.

On a really hot day, since i don't have central AC either, I really enjoy spending a few hours in the air-conditioned public library. Good for the brain cells, too.

If you're really disciplined, another nice place to go is the air-conditioned mall, but be careful!

I hate shopping, so I wouldn't want to go to the mall! The smell and the crowds--- yuck!

The library is a great idea for a change of scenery!

I love making our own freeze pops! So yummy and refreshing on a hot day. Smile Those plus lots of fans and the occasional cold shower got us through summers before we had air conditioning.

We make meals in the crock pot/slo cooker on hot days. It great for chicken breasts or pieces to be stripped off the bone and added to greens for example While at the library, have a look at books on Salads for new ideas. Ice cream or sherbert for dessert. Lemonade slush & pineapple smoothies.

Drink as much water as you can to stay hydrated. Move activities to the basement. Instead of AC, use a fan and bowl of ice cubes, moving these to your specific location. Play board games, cards or watch DVDs from library. Try DVD yoga, crafts, photo album organization Cool shower 3 times daily. Visit museums, galleries, cheap seat movies, indoor pool like YWCA.

Have you blocked windows to keep out as much heat as possible? Avoid 2nd level since heat rises.

We've spent a considerable time in Thailand where it's v/hot and humid. The locals insist on hot, green tea and v/spicy hot soup with any type of fish heated by the soup.

Whoa... 47 cents isn't NEARLY enough to warrant the effort that a sale would lead to, for goodness sake! That is ridiculous. I am culling my books from school as things wind down, and while there are some that I will keep (medical reference texts, etc.), and some that I will give away (old board prep stuff), the only ones that I will sell are the ones where I know there is some insurance that I can get something considerable. Otherwise it's not worth my time. 47 cents? No thank you!
    Jerry
