Gift Cards and Thinking Ahead

December 30th, 2012 at 04:25 am

We (The Husband, Swimbabies and I) got $200 worth of gift cards from a place that we do not shop... and probably will not shop. I'm trying to decide what to do with them. I may end up re-gifting because I know lots of other people who would like shopping at this particular place. I'll probably just stick them in a drawer and wait for the need to arise.

I need to re-evaluate our pre-tax medical and see what the numbers should be for next year.

I want to increase the amounts that The Husband has deducted for his 401K and that I have deducted for my retirement. It's probably just a quick and easy thing to do, but I haven't even had time for that.

The Swimbabies got some cash from various relatives, which is great. They are all busy planning and deciding how to use it. All are saving a portion! Hurray for that!

I've got a few more days off from work, and I'm grateful for that. I've caught whatever bug is going around, complete with fever and headache, so I've been resting all day. I'm hoping it goes away quickly so I can enjoy some of my days off!

Check out the following sites to see how much you could sell the gift cards for: PlasticJungle .com, Cardpool .com, and Giftcardrescue .com. I've bought discounted gift cards from all 3 and have never had an issue. It's very easy to see what they would pay you, with no obligation. There's also a site (I think called Cardswap) where you can exchange one card for another. So if others really would want to shop there, that might be an option too. Good luck!

I had thought about Plastic Jungle... and I may still do that. Smile

Good plan on the gifts...sell or give as gifts. Either will help your finances! I hope you feel better soon.

When my children were younger, we had one rule with cash gifts. Half of the money had to be deposited into their savings account. By the time they were teenagers, they each had close to $7k in their accounts. I think it's great that you are teaching them to save a portion of their cash. I also have a gift card for $25 (or maybe $20) for BestBuy that I wish was rather for Walmart or Target.

I really like that saving-half idea for the kids. It sounds like it could lead to some serious savings, as well as some insurance of an understanding of saving for something, rather than blowing money like so many young people do these days. Great thinking!

You could also try selling the giftcards on Ebay. Smile
I hope that you get feeling better soon.
